Preparation of Materials

First thing to do is to prepare the materials needed. You'll need the following:
  1. Calligraphy Pad (or any soft-textured paper)
  2. Ink/Calligraphy ink
  3. Calligraphy/Dip Pen (Nib and nib holder)
  4. Paper towel or Water (for cleaning your pen)
  5. A place with flat surface (such as table) where you could do your calligraphy art.

Steps/Tips in doing Calligraphy

  • Holding the Calligraphy pen is just like holding a regular ball pen. The difference is that you'll have to rotate your hand a little in counter-clockwise.
  • Dip your pen into your Calligraphy ink.
  • Your pen must be 45 degrees angle from the paper to avoid the tip of the nib on scratching and ruining your paper.

  • Practice your writing by making lines with both upward and downward strokes.

  • You must remember to write with more pressure downwards, and less pressure upward.

  • The pressure needed in downward strokes depends on the type of nib you have. There are nibs that were stiff and hard, and there are also soft nibs. Although, these nibs have different kinds of style.
  • Always remember to clean your nib regularly to avoid hardening of ink in your nib. You could wipe your nib into a paper tower but remember to wipe it from the broad part of the nib to the tip of it, or you could dip it into a water and gently wash it using your fingers.
Those are some tips we could share to calligraphy enthusiasts, especially for beginners! Keep on writing and HAVE FUN! :)
